Our Kofi hopes to knock them dead

A Mansfield teenager has won a coveted role in a production of Terry Pratchett’s Soul Music at the famous Rose Theatre in Kingston this Summer.

Ex-Brunts School pupil Kofi Dennis will play the part of Death in this adaption of the much-loved novel for Youth Music Theatre UK.

The talented 16 year-old was chosen from among hundreds of other young performers during auditions earlier in the year to act in productions during a residential summer course lasting two–four weeks.

“I am really, really happy with the part,” said Kofi.

“It is quite challenging vocally, because there is a song to perform and it is quite straining on the voice.

“The part is quite dark but Death is also quite a funny character, so you have to be careful how you play it so it is not too sinister.”

Youth Music Theatre UK is the country’s leading music theatre company for young people aged 11-21 and offers top quality training and mentoring – whether as a performer, musician, stagehand or administrator.

Kofi has run a series of charity events in Mansfield to help meet the cost of the course fees.

A fundraising night at Naaz Indian Cuisine, Mansfield Woodhouse, helped raise £630.

Kofi will soon be attending Nottingham’s Bilborough College to study performance, theatre and dance.

Appearing in the production is a real opportunity for the aspiring performer. Other well-known Youth Music Theatre UK participants include chart topping singer-songwriters Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith.

The production runs from 28th-31st August.
