Parish councillor suggests lower speed limit on Hucknall Road in Newstead could save lives

A LIFE could be saved if the speed limit on Hucknall Road in Newstead was reduced, it was claimed at Newstead’s annual parish meeting.

There is currently a 60 mph limit on the road from the top of hill next to the old cemetery, leading to Hucknall.

But Coun Philip Burnham felt there was a good case to cutting the limit to a maximum of 50 mph, which applies to the part of the road that leads to Annesley.

The death of 15-year-old Hucknall boy Harrison Carlin, whose cycle collided with a car on Forest Lane, Papplewick, on 1st July last year, was mentioned at the meeting.

Councillors said a similar tragedy could occur on Hucknall Road unless it was made safer.

“This is something we have raised before but I think it is worth us having another go,” said Coun Burnham.
