Arthur and Sheila Parker live at Fairway View care home in the town and celebrated 65 years since their first meeting with a surprise intimate dinner served in the vintage tearoom, which was decorated with balloons, banners and fresh flowers.

And it was a double celebration as the date also coincides with their 63rd wedding anniversary.

After two years, Arthur popped the question and the couple tied the knot on May 11, 1957, at Shakespeare Street register office.

Sheila explained: “Lots of brides are often very nervous on their wedding day, but that wasn’t my experience, I simply couldn’t wait to say, ‘I do’.”

Arthur said: “We have had such an incredible time celebrating our anniversary, the team at Fairway View really have worked hard to put this meal together for us and it just shows how much they are willing to do for their residents.

“I believe we have been so successful in our marriage because we have always worked as a team and made sure to speak to each other with respect.

“I think that the younger generation should remember you should always talk to your partner how you would like them to talk to you.”

The couple were extremely grateful to the staff who made their celebration even more special.

Sheila said: “I simply couldn’t ask for more, everyone has been incredibly thoughtful. Our date was wonderful, from the music, to the food and all the details in between. I can’t thank them enough for what they did.”
