The online fundraiser has been launched by Little Signers; North Nottinghamshire branch, which is run by Hannah Lindahl.

Hannah, who lives in Hucknall, said: “Since the restrictions for movement were imposed I have been running my baby signing classes online.

“On Tuesday I hosted an ‘all-request’ session where I invited current and past class members to join me for an online class and gave them the chance to request their favourite song from my classes. In return I asked for voluntary donations for a collection that will be donated to the Hucknall Food Bank.

“Seventy-nine people registered for the session, we sang (and signed) for over an hour and so far we have raised over £200, and donations are still coming in.”

In the past Hannah has coordinated huge donations to the food bank on behalf of the group.

She said that the current Sign for Good campaign gives her families a chance to feel that what they are doing is not only having a positive impact on their lives, but is also an opportunity to make a difference to many others who are struggling. “Supporting a worthwhile cause like the food bank has given everyone a special focus and real motivation to stay connected,” said Hannah. “For many members, being able to make even a small donation has been a great way to feel like they are a part of something – a movement for good.”

Shelley Ensor, founder of Little Signers Club, hopes the generosity and compassion of the families attending classes will help others know that the club is a safe and welcoming place for any parent trying to find their new online community.

She said: “This lockdown could go on for a long time and everyone is starting to feel the strain of the uncertainty. But as soon as we opened up our existing online membership to the wider public, we started seeing people smile again. We’ve seen children signing for the first time, we’ve seen, and heard, squeals of joy as little ones have seen their favourite class leader on screen.”
