The £10.3 million scheme at the Top Wighay Farm, overseen by Nottinghamshire County Council, will benefit from an investment of £3m by D2N2 from its Local Growth Fund allocation of £257.5m.

This investment will help kick start the project which had stalled due to funding issues.

The Top Wighay Farm site, a 40-hectare site situated north-west of Hucknall, will feature an 805-property housing development, a new primary school, and a community centre.

The development will also feature land for offices and warehouses plus associated open space for the community.

Work is due to begin in the summer with infrastructure works expected to be completed by 2021.

The funding from D2N2 will go towards infrastructure improvements on the site including the expansion of a roundabout on the A611/Annesley Road and a new signal-controlled junction to manage traffic flow to and from the site.

In addition, a new three-metre wide shared-use footway and cycleway along the A611 will be created, designed to promote sustainable travel for the site’s residents.

Elizabeth Fagan CBE, D2N2 chair, said: “D2N2 has agreed to invest in the Top Wighay Farm scheme in order to unlock the site’s excellent potential to boost our region’s housing stock and unlock more land for commercial development.

“Supporting investment in key infrastructure to act as a stimulus for wider economic growth through housing and employment remains a vital part of ensuring we restart our local economy post-coronavirus.”

Coun Kay Cutts, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We welcome the news of this additional £3m investment towards one of our council’s flag ship projects.

“The Top Wighay development has the needs of the local community at its core as it will generate more than 1,000 new jobs and invest in community facilities, infrastructure and education facilities, including the creation of new council offices.

“Now more than ever, major developments like this will help boost the economic prospects of our county.”
