Police operations tackle road deaths

Hucknall police have been carrying out a number of traffic operations in recent weeks in a bid to improve road safety.

With another fatal accident occurring only this week in Mansfield, the number of deaths on the county’s roads in December alone equates to over half of the total number of deaths in the previous 11 months.

In a number of road safety operations across the Hucknall area, police have been targeting the Fatal Four – that is the four main causes of fatalities on the roads; not wearing a seat belt, using a mobile phone, speeding and drink driving.

The high visibility operations will serve to remind people about the dangers of these offences as well as stopping those who are breaking the law.

Chief Insp Andy Charlton said: “December was a terrible month on our road network, with 12 people dying.

“We regularly publicise safety advice to motorists, to raise awareness of the dangers of the fatal four.

“What is most concerning is the majority of the collisions we see could be avoided if people followed our advice.

“As a result of the increase in road deaths, we have stepped up our road patrols and continue to target those who display erratic or potentially dangerous driving.

“Over the next few months we are likely to see changes in the weather, and I would urge people to drive according to the conditions of road and within the speed limit.”
