Post-mortem fails to reveal cause of Ciaran Sweeney’s death

A post-mortem examination has failed to reveal how a Mansfield teenager died, and inquest has heard.

The body of 14-year-old Ciaran Sweeney from the Oak Tree estate was discovered in gravel pits off Southwell Road by a police underwater unit on 1st October, following an extensive search.

Nottinghamshire coroner Mairin Casey told a hearing at Nottingham Council House this morning, Friday 18th October, that Ciaran’s remains had been identified through DNA testing.

She added that hundreds of Mansfield people had helped search for Ciaran after he was reported missing from home on 14th September, including children from Samworth Academy where Ciaran had been a student.

Further forensic examinations will now take place, the inquest heard.
