Pub steps closed off for '˜safety' reasons

People living in part of Bulwell have suddenly been deprived of a short cut to catch trams into the city.

A well-used set of stone steps next to the Horse Shoe pub, on Station Road, have been blocked off.

The 26 steps have provided a convenient access for pedestrians to get from Highbury Road to the Bulwell tram stop and Riverlyn Medical Centre, as well as to reach the pub itself.

It is believed he site owners, Enterprise Inns, have closed the steps for health and safety reasons as an adjacent wall is in a state of disrepair, causing a gap to appear.

A “Danger- Keep Out” notice has been placed on a barrier at the top of the steps.

Although the steps are not a public right of way, leading across the pub car park, Bulwell residents have taken advantage of them for many years.

Users of the steps now face a lengthy walk and, in one direction, they have to make their way up the steep hill on Highbury Road from the Market Place.

The only other alternative is to cross the Bulwell railway station bridge, which has five flights of steps.

Resident Steve Carpenter said: “It came as a big surprise to me when I found the steps closed and I hope they will soon be back open.”

No comment has so far been received from Enterprise Inns despite a request from the Dispatch.
