Headteacher, Emma Severn, said: “As a school we feel that it is important that our children and parents are aware of the health benefits of milk, particularly for our younger children.

“We felt that by dressing the children up, having a fun learning experience, exploring the different tastes and uses of milk as well as educating parents about the values of milk in children’s diets, we would encourage more parents to incorporate milk into our children’s diets and could increase the number of children signed up to receive their school milk.”

Senior Nutrition Scientist at The Dairy Council, Erica Hocking, said: “At primary school age, it is essential that children have a balanced diet and get plenty of physical activity to help them maintain a healthy weight as they get older.

“World School Milk Day is therefore a great way to highlight the importance of drinking milk and to help children to understand the meaning of healthy eating.

“Research shows that milk consumption may have a beneficial effect on growth and body weight in children and therefore schools have a key role to play in encouraging children to replace sugary drinks with milk or water.

“We would like to thank Holgate Primary and Nursery School for supporting our initiative. Milk is an easy, tasty and affordable way for children to get their recommended daily allowance of calcium, protein and iodine and we hope pupils have enjoyed learning about milk.”
