Ralph said: “The book is a history of the Vale from prehistoric times , through the Roman and Viking eras to the Industrial Revolution and the Hollins Mills.

“It is illustrated with photographs from various collections.

People have been very generous in supplying me with historic photos.”

Ralph, 73, a former magistrate is often invited to lecture on the subject at history societies and book groups.

As well as historical accounts of the area’s long gone great houses there are tales about local personalities and villains adding colour to the subject matter.

Tales from the Vale is £5 from Mansfield Museum and Mac’s Newsagents, Pleasley, by contacting [email protected], or by telephone on 01623 40703.
