REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: Mansfield and Ashfield falls silent to remember the fallen

Services took place at churches and War memorials in towns and villages across the area as part of commemorations to honour members of the armed forces killed in conflict.

There was also a two-minute silence observed under beautiful blue skies and bright, mid-autumn sunshine.

This weekend’s events were even more poignant as they coincided with the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, as well as the recent ending of Britain’s military involvement in Afghanistan.

Wreaths were laid by politicians and dignitaries at the War Memorial at Mansfield Civic Centre before a parade through the town centre ahead of a service at St Peter’s Church.

Similar commemorations were held at Mansfield Woodhouse, Warsop, Forest Town and Rainworth in the district.

In Ashfield, wreaths were laid at the cenotaph in Sutton after a parade from Portland Square to St Mary’s Church, while in Kirkby there was a service at St Thomas’ Church followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial.

Services were also held at Selston, Huthwaite, Stanton Hill and Skegby in the district.

Nationally, the Queen led commemorations and was joined by political leaders and veterans for a ceremony at the Cenotaph in London - the focal point of the UK’s Remembrance Sunday services.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Today we stand united to remember the courageous men and women who have served our country, defended our freedoms and kept us safe.

“We remember all those who have fallen and those who have risked their lives to protect us.

“We owe each and every member of our armed forces and the families who support them a tremendous debt - one that can never be repaid - and I pay huge tribute to their bravery and resolve.”
