The event at Worcester Rugby Club is always celebrated on the first Saturday of June to commemorate the 1794 naval battle known as the ‘Glorious First of June.’

The 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment of Foot served as marines aboard HMS Brunswick and HMS Ramillies during the battle, sinking French ship Vengeur du Peuple, despite suffering the heaviest casualty toll of any Royal Navy ship present.
