Ride and stride to the aid of crumbling churches

A TRIO of churches in the Dispatch district is gearing up for this year’s Ride And Stride fundraiser in aid of crumbling places of worship.

The event, on Saturday September 10, comprises supporters plotting a route around local churches of all denominations and collecting sponsorship in the process.

Members from 243 churches in Nottinghamshire are taking part, including some associated with St Mary’s on Highbury Road, Bulwell; St Michael’s on Church Lane, Linby; and St James’s off Main Street, Papplewick.

Those involved cycle, jog and walk between the churches as part of what is a national initiative run by the Historic Churches Trust. It normally raises in excess of £1.5 million.

Many of the churches open specially for the day to serve refreshments, while others hold open days.

Money is earmarked to make urgent repairs to churches built before 1939.
