DOZENS of workers had to be evacuated as a fire took hold in the canteen at the Rolls-Royce plant in Hucknall on Wednesday night (February 23).

The blaze started in a vending machine at 6.40 at the site off Watnall Road. Firefighters had to carry out a full-scale search of the building after a member of staff was reported missing.

But it proved to be a false alarm as the man was quickly found. It is understood he went to the wrong fire-evacuation point

The building was filled with thick, black smoke, and the interior was damaged.

Fifteen firefighters were at the scene for almost three hours bringing the flames under control and then damping down. No-one was injured.

Mark Haywood, of Hucknall fire station, said: “We don’t know yet why the fire started in the vending machine. It is a strange one and certainly something I haven’t come across before.”

Mr Haywood said it could have been an electrical fault but an investigation is being carried out.
