In a letter to the school’s principal, Tim Croft, an inspector said it had taken ‘swift, determined and appropriate action’ to improve after being judged as requiring improvement during its last Ofsted.

Inspectors found staff at Sutton the academy were moving in the right direction and were on track for further improvement.

Mr Croft said: “It is encouraging to see Ofsted recognising the hard work taking place at our academy.

“The detailed action plans we have put in place are already bringing results, such as the specialist maths tutor we appointed and extra tuition lessons on offer for every pupil.

“Our bespoke approach to each pupil’s learning means we treat them as individuals so we can offer them the support they need to reach their full potential.”

Her Majesty’s Inspector, Deidre Duignan, said in her letter that the improvements to teaching and leadership in mathematics were now having greater impact and the academy now had higher expectations of teachers, and senior leaders have a clear system of holding them to account for the achievement of their students.

But the inspector said more needed to be done to develop specific strategies to improve students’ oral communication skills and strengthen the role of middle leaders to help improve the academy.

Ian Cleland, Chief Executive of Academy Transformation Trust commented: “We will be working with Tim and his teams to ensure that the extensive expertise and support that the Trust can provide will help improve outcomes and results for all our pupils.”

Mr Croft added: “I am confident that next year’s exam results will reflect the determination of both staff and pupils to improve.”
