Schoolgirls sent home in skinny fit trousers row

New uniform rules at The Dukeries Academy Ollerton have caused controversy after girls were sent home because their trousers were considered too tight.

The school says parents have been informed twice about the changes and they had even paid for new trousers for some pupils.

But parents are accusing the school of a lack of consistency saying the rules are not being applied to all pupils.

Parent Shelley Sheppard said her daughters Kaylea, 14, and Shannon 12 were sent home on Monday.

She said: “I kept them off school Tuesday and arranged to meet with the head. They are now still being kept in lessons.

“Another mum told me her daughters have been sent home every day. It’s just not fair, there are at least 50 girls still wearing them who haven’t been stopped.”

Parents are calling for the rule to be relaxed until the next term so the girls can get their wear out of the trousers they have bought already.

Principal Ian Barton said a letter was sent to all parents in June reminding parents and pupils of uniform expectations in preparation for the autumn term and a further letter was sent last week.

He added; “Some pupils who were not wearing the correct uniform and were not able to supply the correct uniform completed their school day separate from other pupils.

“Where parental permission was obtained, pupils were taken to a shop to supply them with the correct uniform.

“We aim to be supportive of pupils and their families in helping them to meet these requirements and we have been speaking with parents this week to work together on an agreeable solution. We are grateful for the cooperation of parents and pupils.”
