Scouts go Wild at Hardwick Hall

The National Trust teamed up with a local scout group to offer nature walks, pond dipping, bug hunting and a chance to practice forestry with the Hardwick rangers.

Chris Eyre, Group Scout Leader for the 16th (Westbourne) Sheffield Scout Group said, “We’ve had a fantastic day here at Hardwick. Scouting is run by volunteers, so we really value partnerships with organisations like the National Trust that allow us to offer young people great opportunities for fun and adventure in the outdoors.”

It’s all part of helping Hardwick to gear up for their ‘Scouting Summer’. With the help of a local volunteer, the team have produced a new free guide for beavers, cubs and scouts visiting the property. It helps them take part in fun activities and work towards scouting badges as part of their visit.

Dominic Adcock, one of the scouts in the group said, “Today was awesome. We got a chance to work with the Hardwick rangers digging and pruning hedges and thinning out trees - learning new skills and helping make the park look great for other visitors.”

This July and August, Hardwick are offering free entry to the Hall and Gardens for any beaver, cub or scout wearing their necker – so come along and join in the fun!

Jo Rawson, Volunteering and Community Involvement Manager at Hardwick said: “The National Trust and the Scouting movement are natural partners – we both care about making sure that young people have great fun and enjoy nature and outdoor activities. We’re really looking forward to opening our doors to lots of beavers, cubs, scouts and their families this summer!”
