SELSTON: Tributes paid to campaigner who dedicated life to keep path open

Frank Wood (91) campaigned tirelessly for 49 years to secure the future of the path which runs between Inkerman Street and Inkerman Road.

Selston parishioners are still awaiting to hear the results of the public inquiry held in September for a final decision on the path’s future.

It is a result that Mr Wood will not get to hear after he died on 13th November.

Sam Wilson, chair of Selston Parish Council, said: “It is a great sadness. We may not have seen eye to eye on this particular issue but he was always a valued member on the council and it is a very sad loss.”

In 2007, Mr Wood referred the closure of the path to the planning inspectorate who ruled that the footpath should remain open because historically, it had linked the isolated communities of Bagthorpe, Hanstubbin and Underwood.

But it was again sent to a public inquiry to decide its future. Mr Wood was born and grew up in Selston. He regularly used the path to get around the town before moving to Mansfield in his later life. His funeral will be held on 29th November.
