Sherwood MP set to open Bestwood footbridge

A new footbridge that has been built to reduce serious accidents at a notorious rail crossing in Bestwood will be officially opened tomorrow.

Sherwood MP Mark Spencer will be on hand at the ceremony to mark the opening of the new footbridge which has replaced the Bayles and Wylies crossing.

The level crossing was closed in February.

Network Rail and NET have been working with local authorities to design and build a permanent bridge which crosses both rail and tramway at this location.

The bridge was built following the deaths of a number of people at the site over recent years.

Teenager Lindesy Inger (13) was killed at the crossing in November.

Her grieving foster mum. Marlene Starling, this week told Dispatch: “I’ve been down there to have a look at the bridge and it seems bigger than I had thought it would be.

“It just hope it stops anyone else being killed.

“I’d hate the thought of other parents going through what I have.”

And she added: “She was just becoming a teenager. Her life was just starting really. I just want to cry.”

Marlene, who began looking after Lindsey when the youngster was just six months old, is planning to attend the opening ceremony.
