He said he had confronted the men and taken a quantity of drugs from them, which he later threw away.

But they then returned later and ambushed the 37-year-old while he was out walking his dog.

Police have confirmed that they are now hunting the men, who Mr Bown described as being ‘Eastern European’.

In an exclusive interview, he told Chad He had fought with two men and two more who jumped over a fence to surround him.

“The guy behind me pulled a knife and hit me. I felt a sharp pain in my chest, said Colin

“It wasn’t till I looked down I saw there was blood all over.

“I pulled the knife out and they ran off.”

“I’d caught one of them selling drugs near my home. “I don’t want people selling drugs around here - I have an 11-year-old son and I don’t want drugs anywhere near him.”

“I was brought up in a rough area and I have seen what drugs can do to people.”

His wife Tammy Bown said: “He came in and said he had been stabbed and told me to phone an ambulance.

“I thought he was messing about.

“When I looked at the wound I didn’t think it looked so bad, but he said he felt faint.

“I put pressure on his chest with a tea towel and in a few minutes there was blood all over the wall and floor.

”I was just shocked I couldn’t believe it.

He was taken by ambulance to the Queens Medical Centre where a pipe was inserted into his lung to drain the blood.

Derbyshire Police have issued descriptions of men they want to trace.

A spokesman said the offender was wearing a grey Everlast top, dark Nike tracksuit bottoms, bright yellow or green trainers and a black and green baseball cap with a circle logo with wings sprouting from it.

One of the other men was tall, of stocky build and with a bald head.

They were believed to be Eastern European, possibly Polish.

Anyone who recognises those descriptions should call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
