Shirebrook woman sentenced for falsely claiming benefits

A Shirebrook woman who claimed £79,390 in benefits she was not entitled to, has been sentenced to 12-months in prison.

Kawana Greig (34), of Central Drive, Shirebrook had pleaded not guilty to falsely claiming benefits, but a jury at Derby Crown Court on 5th July 2013 unanimously decided she was guilty.

The matter was then bought back to Derby Crown Court on 25th July 2013 for sentencing and Greig was handed a 12-month prison sentence.

The joint investigation by Bolsover District Council and The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) saw Greig claim Income Support, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit as a single parent between January 2006 and November 2011 whilst she had been living with a partner who was in employment. 

She was sentenced for dishonestly failing to declare a change in circumstances, contrary to Section 111A(1A) of the Social Security Administration Act 1992 and also has to repay the amounts she has falsely claimed.
