Social club still standing after 60 years

When all the clubs around them began to close, members at the Bishop’s Walk club took a stand against closing their doors.

With cheap supermarket deals readily available on alcohol, club secretary Mick Towers said it is sad to see people buying cheap beer and missing out on the social part of going down to the club.

“We have undertaken some huge developments at the club in order to keep it going.

“We didn’t have any other option because all the clubs are really struggling at this time. The trade isn’t there anymore and membership is dwindling

“The choice was to either down size or lose the club completely, but now we are getting back on track.”

Local builder Alan Green Investments has bought out part of the club enabling it to keep running. And there are plans in the pipeline to build housing around the club.

The club has been completely refurbished creating a ‘pub’ feel.

It has been fitted with new stages, toilets and bar area. But it has lost its huge function room in a bid to stay afloat.
