Southwell Minster holds Great War commemoration

The public are invited to take part in a day of reflection at Southwell Minster on Monday to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First Word War.

Tribute-payers can use empty naves to light a candle and record their thoughts.

On the hour another large candle will be lit, people and their communities will be remembered and a minute’s silence will be observed.

The day will culminate with a vigil of words and music between 8pm and 9pm.

Acting Dean Nigel Coates said: “You just have to look at the hundreds of war memorials around our county alone to have some idea of the devastating loss of human life during that time.”
