Sowing the seeds forhealthy-eating partnership

A HOME and garden company from Bulwell have sown the seeds for a partnership that will promote healthy eating for youngsters.

RICHARD SANKEY AND SON, who are leading manufacturers of gardening and horticultural products, have joined forces with Nottinghamshire Scouts.

As part of the venture, the firm have provided more than 600 grow pots, as well as seed trays and cress seeds, in a bid to encourage more children to plant vegetables, watch them grow and then eat them.

“It’s a great sense of achievement when you produce a plant from a seed or cutting,” said Claire McCamphill, who is brand manager for Bennerley Road-based Sankey.

“By providing the tools to do this, we are raising awareness of the benefits of ‘growing it yourself’ among the younger generation.”

Sankey’s products were used during activities where Cub Scouts and Beaver Scouts learned how to grow cress from seed in preparation for last month’s Big Lunch – a national initiative encouraging communities to come together through growing food and fruit.

Matt Rooney, of Nottinghamshire Scouts, said: “Scouting has played a huge role in developing stronger communities for more than 100 years. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to partner a thriving local business to promote healthy eating with a community focus.

“It is something young people can really get stuck into while working towards their healthy-eating badge.”
