GHOST-hunters are hoping that spirits of a different kind will be on tap when they descend on Hucknall’s historic Red Lion pub on Saturday March 12.
For paranormal investigators will spend the night at the pub on High Street and want interested locals to join them on the eerie vigil.
The group, Ghost Gang Hauntings, which is behind the event, has chosen the Lion after reports of spooky goings-on.
Samantha Hutchinson, of Ghost Gang, said: “Staff have told us about strange happenings, particularly in the cellar.
“They say there is a presence there, and the apparition of a young boy has been spotted. They have been tapped on the shoulder.
“This should be a very interesting night. We want to look a every way of detecting spirits we can.”
The pub, which is thought to be Hucknall’s oldest, dates back to the 18th century.
It has become an integral part of the town’s heritage trail and guided walks in recent years thanks to its connections with the Byron family.
In bygone years, it was the family’s rent house where their tenants were feasted on the annual rent day. The poet, Lord Byron, is also said to have drunk there.
Ben Caunt, the famous former bareknuckle-boxer from Hucknall who became champion of England, also worked as a candle-snuffer at the Lion in the 1820s.
“It is steeped in history,” said Samantha. “We want everyone at the event to get a real flavour for the atmosphere at the pub and we will use all manner of techniques to make sure that happens.”
The investigation at the Lion will run from 11 pm until 4 am. It will start with a session led by spiritual medium Patrick Hutchinson, Samantha’s father, who has visited the pub before. There will also be a tour of the premises after a rundown of its history.
Ghost Gang Hauntings will then use seances, table tipping — a type of seance in which participants sit around a table, place their hands on it, and wait for rotations — and Ouija boards in a bid to summon and communicate with spirits.
Tickets cost £25 per person. Anyone interested in taking part can call Samantha on 0115 8081139 or log on at www.ghostganghauntings.co.uk.
