St George’s Day celebrations for Scouts

Over 750 Ashfield Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Leaders and parents attended a fun event held at Ashfield School on Sunday to celebrate St George’s Day.

Ever since the Scouts’ founder Sir Robert Baden-Powell identified St George as the patron saint of Scouting, it has been tradition for Scouts to renew their promises together in Districts on St George’s Day weekend.

Ashfield District Scouts held a formal, open air ceremony at the event, where they renewed their promises, before participating in mixed-age team races (age five to 15) on the largest inflatable obstacle course in the East Midlands.

The youngsters then had fun laughing at the older Explorer Scouts who took on the adults.

The winning team was the 1st Hucknall Dynamites followed closely by runners up 1st Selston Superstars.

The special guest on the day was Sir John Peace, The Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, and his wife Lady Christine, who presented the medals to the winning team.

Sir John said: “If you want a marker for how successful the day has been, the young boy who cried with happiness at having won a medal shows that all of the hard work that everyone has put into creating this event was worth it.”

Beaver Scout mum Emma Kelly said: “My son had a fab time. He came home filthy and shattered. What a great day.”

Scout Frazer Osborne (10), said the day had been ‘totally wicked!’.
