A major ambition in Hucknall for the New Year may be to revive the town’s Summer Carnival.

The idea was put forward at a meeting of the I Love Hucknall town team, held at the Children’s Centre on Broomhill Road.

The carnival was hugely popular in the 1930s, when all sections of the town combined to provide help for local charities.

Mark Allison, of the Sweet Cafe on Hucknall High Street, who is treasurer of I Love Hucknall, said a summer carnival would fit in with the group’s aim of reinvigorating Hucknall as a place to visit.

He pointed out that Hucknall Rotary Club, who organise the town’s Christmas Carnival, had expressed an interest in the suggestion.

The club are likely to be represented at I Love Hucknall’s next meeting on Wednesday 29th January, when the idea will be discussed further.

One suggestion is that the carnival could be fitted in with the Hucknall-based Byron Festival, which takes place during the summer.

Sheila Robinson, treasurer of Hucknall Tourism and Regeneration Group, said she favoured a summer carnival in principle and looked forward to seeing how the idea could be developed.

Janet Archer, of Specsavers on High Street, said she thought a summer carnival was a ‘very good idea’.

She added: “The popularity of the Christmas Carnival has shown that the desire is already there for people in the community to get together.

“A summer carnival would be another way of achieving this objective and boosting the town centre as well. ”
