Support local retailers this weekend
The first ever Small Business Saturday takes place today (7th December) – traditionally one of the busiest shopping days in the run up to Christmas.
It is the brainchild of MP Chuka Umunna, based on a similar initiative in America, and has support from all major political parties.

Coun Joan Dixon, Derbyshire County Council cabinet member for jobs, economy and transport, said: “Small, independent traders are the heartbeat of the Derbyshire economy and Small Business Saturday is a great way of turning the spotlight on the service they provide.
“I’ll be doing my bit and encourage others to join in and make a special effort to spend locally. This isn’t just about backing local butchers, bakers, clothes shops and market traders, it’s also an opportunity to seek out a local plumber, electrician or handyman.
“Our Trusted Trader directory lists over 1,300 tradesmen across 80 different trades to make it easy for people to find a reputable operator.
“We’re fortunate in Derbyshire to have some brilliant local retailers and tradesmen and this is a great opportunity to celebrate that and boost the local economy at the same time.”
