Suspended jail term for assault and theft

A Kirkby man has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting stealing £96 worth of laundry gels and assaulting a shop assistant.

Mansfield magistrates were told how Robert Waterfield (56), of Lammas Lane, was seen putting items into his coat at the High Street Co-op store.

Robert Carr, prosecuting, said Waterfield caused swelling to the shop assistant’s hand when he refused to let go of the bag she tried to wrestle from his hand when he tried to leave the store without paying.

Deborah Bell, defending, said the Kirkby man had caused the injury in sheer desperation to escape.

He was jailed for 14 days, suspended for six months, and ordered to pay £50 compensation.
