Sutton dementia care group expands coverage area

A support group providing a lifeline to Ashfield and Mansfield residents with dementia is expanding its services in the Newark area.

Open Door was set up by Maxine Huskinson from Kirkby 18 months ago with support and advice from Nottinghamshire County Council.

It offers social activities for people in the early stages of the disease along with therapy sessions that aim to stimulate their mind and body.

Maxine said: “When a diagnosis of dementia is given at whatever age the options available to the sufferer are very limited. There was a gap in the market and we filled it.

“We focus on early stage dementia and it just seemed the right time.

“Our group is a lifeline to both the sufferer and the carer, giving carers the opportunity to get involved in an activity of their choice whilst knowing that the person who they care for is in a safe environment and taking part in a session that is helping them to maintain their skills for as long as possible.”

“Unfortunately, it can be a lonely and isolating time for people and their families who have just received a diagnosed of dementia. Our sessions encourage people to share their experiences and combat the stigma that surrounds the disease.”

Sessions are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday at Harwood Court Community Centre, Sutton and Thursday sessions will be held at the Flow Service Club House, Balderton from September.
