Sutton woman’s heart fundraiser

The Great Wall of China is only one step away for a Sutton woman who is aiming to raise thousands for charity.

Leanne Evangelou is trekking the historic Wall for eight days to raise money and awareness for Patches Heart Group, a community support group run by parents that offers 24-hour support for families of children with congenital heart defects and conditions.

Leanne said: “My identical twin sister Stacey Jane passed away when she was 18 months old from congenital heart defects.

“She had to have an operation which had only an 80-20 per cent chance of survival, and sadly she lost her battle.

“I always wanted to do something to honour Stacey. When I was 18 I had a tattoo of her name written in Chinese symbols.

“I love the tattoo but wanted to do more, to help other children and families and also raise awareness of a fantastic charity, so this is it!”

Leanne has been involved in a number of events to get towards her target amount, including a tea party on her 30th birthday, attended by family and friends, and fundraised at the recent Body and Soul Gym’s boxing show at the John Fretwell Centre.

There’s further events planned, at the The Harrow Inn of Ollerton and the Burnt Stump Pub.

Leanne added: “I’ve been training really hard. The support for this has been incredible and I want to thank every single person who’s helped- there’s just too many to mention.

“I can’t wait to go now.Hopefully I can make a little difference for a truly amazing cause and I’m sure Stacey will be watching me as I go.”
