Sean Alexander Harpe, 19, now of Brand Lane, Stanton Hill, admitted possessing a small amount of the Class B drug at the YMCA, on Commercial Gate, on March 24, when he appeared before magistrates on Thursday.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said Harpe was last before the courts on December 31, 2015, where he received a community order for breaching a restraining order and possession of cannabis. He was also on licence for a previous custodial sentence.

Cheryl Nisbet, of the probation service, said: “He was homeless at that time and he was pretty chaotic.

“Since then he has found accommodation and he’s working extremely well with his probation officer.”

Harpe, who was not represented, told the court: “I can’t excuse what I did, it was wrong. I have quit cannabis and I am getting on with my life. I have made a change.”

Magistrates told him they were giving him ‘a last chance’ and fined him £50. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £20.
