Tributes to Mandela continue to flood in from Nottinghamshire’s leaders

Tony Egginton, Mansfield’s executive mayor, said people across the Mansfield district are saddened to hear the news.

“People across the Mansfield District and across the world will be saddened to hear that Nelson Mandela has died.

“Nelson Mandela was a truly inspirational political leader who fought tirelessly for what he believed in. He changed the world forever and his legacy will live on.

“I firmly believe in the importance of recognising the passing of such a great statesman by flying the flag at half-mast to mark Mansfield’s profound respect for all he did.” He said.

The Anti Apartheid Movement leader died at 8.50pm last night (Thursday).

A book of condolence has also been placed in the Civic Centre, where members of the public can leave their tributes.

The book of condolence is available for mourners to sign until 4.30pm today and 9am to 5pm on Monday 9 December to Thursday 12 December.

The tributes will then be sent on to the South African Commission in London.

Nottinghamshire County Council also announced that it will join Mansfield and Ashfield District Councils in flying its flag at half mast at County Hall today.

Coun Alan Rhodes, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, supported the anti-apartheid movement during the 1970s and 80s.

He said: “This is a very sad day. Nelson Mandela will go down as one of the greatest leaders and statesmen in the history of the World.

“On a personal note, the image of Nelson Mandela and his wife Winnie walking hand-in-hand on the day he was freed will stay with me for all time.

“We can all learn from Mr Mandela’s humility, unwavering belief in fairness and equality and the way he treated people, no matter who they were. The World would be a much better place if we all followed his example and adopted more of his qualities.”
