Tributes paid to 69-year-old who died in fire

Tributes have been paid to a 69-year-old man who died in a fire in a farmhouse near Alfreton.

George Hall, who lived on a farm on Pilsley Road, Morton, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was rescued from the house at around 8.45pm on Wednesday.

His dog managed to escape the blaze.

A close family friend, who has asked not to be named, has paid tribute to George.

She said: “He was one of the nicest, most genuine people you could ever meet and did not deserve to go this way.

“He would do anything for anyone and would help out in any way that he could.”

Tributes have also been paid to George on our Facebook page.

Victoria Edwards wrote: “RIP George such a lovely man.”

Russ Brough commented: “My best friend I’ve known him all my life... it’s so sad.”

Diane Partridge said: “So sad, my thoughts are with the family.”

A joint investigation into the fatal blaze involving Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and Derbyshire police began this morning.

A fire spokesman said: “Our thoughts and sympathy are extended to the family and friends of the deceased at this sad and distressing time.”
