The Conservative candidate said the day had been a ‘rollercoaster of emotions’ after everyone has worked so hard to ‘get to this moment’.

I’ve had five years to acclimatise so I’m not feeling as emotional today as I did first time around,” he said. “But I’m still nervous as there is a weight of responsibility on me to win it for all those people who have supported me and who have voted for me.”

Mr Spencer has been walking the streets in his constituency today but managed to catch a cup of coffee on Hucknall’s High Street.

“It’s been an enjoyable day talking to voters amongst the showers,” he added. “Even those who haven’t voted for me this time, I hope they respect that I have done my best and been friendly.

“The majority of voters will choose the candidate for the national picture and only a few will select on personality but whichever way it goes I want to thank the people of Sherwood for coming out to vote.

“I also want to thank all the counters and staff at the polling stations for ensuring the democratic process works.”

No matter what the result reveals in the next few hours, Mr Spencer has promised to take his wife of 19 years, Claire, away for the weekend for a well-earned break.

“We’ve not seen each other much in recent months, so come what may I am taking her away.”
