He said: “We have converted an old rundown vehicle garage into a light bright and airy space that can now be used as a gymnasium, as well as creating new male and female changing facilities.

“We removed the old rusty roller shutter doors, and have introduced additional heating and cooling systems to ensure that the space is user friendly in all weather conditions.

“The old hard concrete floor has been covered with a new wood effect vinyl floor covering and we are delighted with the final results.”

Creating the new training space has allowed gym equipment previously being used in classroom spaces to have its own dedicated area that reservists can use during their parade evenings and at other times.

Captain Jim Stewart from 4 Mercian, who are based at Bulwell Army Reserve Centre, said: “The requirement for a new gym area was identified a while ago and I know our troops have been looking forward to its arrival.

“All of the gym equipment is now in the new training space and is being used on a regular basis already.”

The total cost of the refurbishment was £153,000.
