Veteran councillorto step down

AFTER 16 years of representing Newstead, Papplewick, Linby and Bestwood Village, COUN JOE LONERGAN (Con) is to step down from Notts County Council.

Coun Lonergan (pictured) has announced he will not contest the county council election on Thursday June 4.

The 74-year-old married father-of-three says he has decided to retire because he is “too old”.

Coun Lonergan told the annual parish meeting of Bestwood Parish Council: “I’ve made lots of colleagues and think I have made a lot of friends.

“I suppose I’m a little bit sad that I am having to say goodbye.”

Coun Lonergan is a governor at Bestwood Village’s Hawthorne Primary School and was awarded an MBE in 1994.

Coun Denis Beeston, chairman of Bestwood Parish Council, said: “I wish Joe all the best in his retirement.

“We have worked hard together and whenever I have needed Joe, he has always come running.”
