VIDEO: Concerns over late night booze sales in Kirkby

The owners of the shop at 43 Central Avenue have applied to Ashfield District Council for a licence that would permit them to sell alcohol and other refreshment from 6am until 11.30pm seven days a week.

But the move has outraged neighbouring residents who fear that serving alcohol so late would attract alcohol and drug-related anti-social behaviour onto the residential road.

Central Avenue resident David Arnold, in his letter of objection, states that there is already a problem with drug dealing on the estate and incidents of crime.

He is concerned that ‘the proposed opening hours of this application will add fuel to the fire of an existing problem’.

Fellow resident Brian Billingham, in his objection, writes that he is ‘concerned as it’s a residential estate and with late night opening it could make our drug problem here even worse’.

Kingsway Stores, which is next to number 43, also has an alcohol licence but stops serving much earlier, as do other off-licences in the town.

Ashfield District Council’s licensing sub committee is meeting on Thursday at 10am to consider the application by 43 Central Avenue for a premises licence.

The sub committee will decide whether to grant the licence after considering the evidence for and against and measuring this against the licensing objectives - the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance and the protection of children from harm.

Nottinghamshire Police have not raised any objections.
