VIDEO: Homes evacuated after farm building explosion and fire

Homes in Bilsthorpe have been evacuated after a fire broke out a work yard this afternoon, with flames reaching up to 30ft high and plumes of smoke that could be seen for miles.

The blaze began shortly before 1.20pm at farm buildings off Farnsfield Road following a loud bang.

With gas bottles stored on site, a 200m corden had been put around the site and people living on Farnsfield Road were asked to leave their homes while crews set about tackling the fire.

Traffic was backed up passed Kirklington Road with police redirecting vehicles away from the scene.

With more than six pumps in attendance, as well as police, those living on nearby Kirklington Road were also asked to evacuate or stay inside with their windows closed.

Street hydrants were opened and pumps were connected to help douse the flames.

Locals said the fire had started in buildings behind White Cottage.

John Barrett, who lives next door, told the Chad: “I had no idea what happened, there was just a loud bang, my neighbour came round and said the fire brigade wanted us out.

“I wasn’t surprised it was a fire after a bang like that.”

A second resident from Kirklington Road said: “I was going out and saw the smoke, so I drove up there and the flames were licking up the trees, that’s how high it was. They were as high as a house.”

There have been no reports of any injuries at this moment and the fire service are still at the scene.
