Wreaths were laid by Bill Woods on behalf of the Royal British Legion, Deputy Lieutenant of Nottingshaire Hugh Matheson and Councillor Don Davies for Ashfield District Council.

Poppy appeal organiser Peter Dawson, who read the names of the fallen at the laying of wreaths, said: “It went very well - there were lots of people there to pay their respects. The road was closed and the streets were packed.

He added: “The people of Ashfield have been very generous again.

“We are still in the process of collecting the money for this year. Last year they donated more than £29,000.”
