VIDEO: Mark Spencer retains Sherwood seat in General Election 2015

Mark Spencer was emotional as he swallowed hard and struggled to make his acceptance speech at the Sherwood count just before 6am.

The Conservative candidate now gets to return to Westminster as Sherwood’s MP after beating his biggest opponent - Labour candidate Leonie Mathers- with 4,647 extra votes.

“I’m delighted and frankly humbled and choked by the confidence shown in me today,” said Mr Spencer. “This result makes me more determined to make it count.”

These words were echoed by Mark’s wife, Claire, whose delight was clear to see as she cheered along with the campaign team and supporters as the count was announced.

“It’s absolutely brilliant news,” said Claire. “He has worked so hard and deserves the majority.

“He loves working, talking and helping the constituents, which is what this job is all about.”

His wife of 19 years, praised the team for their efforts and said Mark’s campaign manager had been ‘unstoppable’.

Despite losing her husband to Westminster for much of the week, Claire said it was worth it for the ‘honour’.

“It’s tough but it’s an honour for Mark to do this job and whenever I visit Parliament I remain in awe of the place and feel great pride.”

The 2015 election in Sherwood revealed a 69.32 per cent turnout of a total electorate of 73,349 people resulting in 50,610 voters. This compares well to the previous election in 2010 which witnessed a turnout of 68.9 per cen which means 48,954 votes cast meaning 1,656 more voters this year.

Labour’s Leonie Mathers left the Dukeries Leisure Centre where the count was held almost immediately after her defeat was announced but took a few minutes on the podium to thank her supporters.

The results are as follows:

Mark Spencer- Conservative- 22,833

Leonie Mathers- Labour-18,186

Sally Chadd- UKIP- 7,399

Lydia Rowan Davies- Bright-Green Party- 1,108

Daniel Mosley- Lib Dem- 1,094

David Perkins- Class War- 78
