Video: Pupils and staff bury time capsule at Stubbin Wood School opening

At a special ceremony, pupils, staff and the leader of Derbyshire County Council, Anne Western, celebrated the opening of the school’s brand new building by burying relics of 2013.

The capsule, buried by head teacher Lee Floyd and Coun Western, will be opened in 50 years time .

Past and present pupils and staff attended the official opening of the school’s new building held on Friday (8th November).

The Shirebrook School, in Common Lane, moved into its new building in April after nearly 30 years at its previous site, in Burlington Avenue, Langwith.

It shares the new building with Shirebrook Academy and enjoys a host of state-of-the-art facilities.

Two new sensory rooms, a living skills area and a £1.2m pool, offer its 150 pupils, who have an autistic spectrum disorder or moderate, severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties, therapy alongside their lessons.

Hidden inside the time capsule were photos, written pieces about life at the school, a copy of the Chad and even an iPod with some of today’s music on it, One Direction was a popular choice.

Coun Anne Western said the opening was an awesome result of a huge team effort.

She said: “A huge team effort has gone into this new school and what an awesome result it is. These are state-of-the-art facilities and they are a marvellous outcome for everyone.”
