Video: Pupils re-join class after head shave

The students had organised the mass head shave as a way of raising money for the families of Adam Smith (18) and Guy Bennett (19).

Adam and Guy, both from Blidworth, were killed on 1st December when the Fiat Punto they were travelling in together was involved in a collision with a Transit van on Main Road, Ravenshead.

A school spokesman told Chad last week: “Two pupils asked the school whether they could shave their heads in order to raise funds.

“We asked them not to do this and suggested that they could raise funds in other ways.

“Unfortunately, some pupils then proceeded to shave their heads. Given the tragic circumstances, we took the decision not to exclude but gave the pupils work to complete away from lessons for a short period, which we feel was appropriate.”

But the decision was met with some very strong reaction from the public.

Camille Seaton said on Facebook: “It is so out of order. These young lads do something off there own backs to help the families who have lost two young men and they get treated like this.

“They should be praised, not isolated. What has their heads being shaved got to do with school work?”

But Jo Emmott said: “If the school has rules about extreme hair styles then in the end, no matter how good the deed, they have broken school rules.”

A Joseph Whitaker spokesman said on Tuesday: “The boys concerned are now back in lessons.

“Support has also been offered through individual counselling.”
