The full name for William and Kate’s newborn is George Alexander Louis - three names that all have strong royal connections.

George has come to represent the continuity of the monarchy and was the bookmakers’ favourite from the moment the Duchess’s pregnancy became public knowledge.

Six King Georges have worn the crown throughout history since the German-born George I, the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain, acceded to the throne in 1714.

The baby prince’s name is likely to be in tribute to the Queen’s father, and the infant’s great-great grandfather, King George VI. The monarch’s grandfather also had the same name - King George V.

The Queen saw her great-grandson for the first time when she visited the Duke and Duchess at their home at Kensington Palace on Wednesday morning, and may have learned of their final choice of moniker at the meeting.

The couple are understood to have had a few ideas for names in mind but it took a couple days for them to finally confirm which one was right for their son.

It was William and Kate’s decision what to call their first-born, and all three names were chosen because they liked them.

The name Louis could be another tribute to a Royal Family member - the important figure of Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh’s uncle and the last British Viceroy of India before independence in 1947. Mountbatten and William’s father Charles were very close but Uncle Dickie, as he was known in the family, was assassinated by the IRA in August 1979.

Baby Prince George’s other middle name - Alexander - is one that three medieval Scottish kings have had, and was also the name of the famous ruler Alexander the Great.

The Queen made the short journey from Buckingham Palace to visit the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

She said she is “thrilled” by the arrival of the future king, who is third in line to the throne.

The visit came before she heads to Balmoral in Scotland for her traditional summer break on Friday.

The royal couple are tackling the tricky task of choosing a name for their son as they spend their first day at home as a family.

William and Kate proudly showed the world their baby prince on Tuesday night and could not contain their joy at becoming parents.

After the excitement of the infant’s first public appearance, a Kensington Palace spokesman stressed the Duke and Duchess were now focused on the age-old job of caring for their baby. He said: “This is now private and quiet time for them to get to know their son.”

Before the royal couple left the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London where their son was born, William revealed naming the baby was now a priority, saying: “We’re still working on a name so we will have that as soon as we can.”

The Duke and Duchess are expected to pick a traditional royal name for their newborn, who is being cared for at his parents’ Kensington Palace home. Royal infants usually have historical names which are passed down through the generations and bookmakers expect this trend to continue. The most popular name with betting firms William Hill, Coral and Paddy Power is George. Six King Georges have worn the crown throughout history since the German-born George I acceded to the throne in 1714.

Dressed in a turquoise floral outfit the Queen looked relaxed as she left Kensington Palace after spending just over half an hour with the latest addition to her family. She had travelled to see William and Kate and their baby without the Duke of Edinburgh who is still convalescing at Windsor Castle following exploratory abdominal surgery last month.

The Duchess held her son first and the couple looked relaxed and smiled broadly as the world’s media captured the moment.

William later held his son and walked forward with his wife to answer a few questions. He began by joking: “He’s got a good pair of lungs on him, that’s for sure. He’s a big boy, he’s quite heavy. We are still working on a name so we will have that as soon as we can.”

He added: “It’s the first time we have seen him really so we are having a proper chance to catch up.”

The Duchess, who still had a bump under her summer dress, said: “It’s very emotional, it’s such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like.”

Her husband agreed: “It’s very special.”

He added: “I’ll remind him of his tardiness when he’s a bit older. I know how long you’ve all been standing here so hopefully the hospital and you guys can all go back to normal now and we can go and look after him.”
