WARSOP: From flooded roads to floods of tears for ‘super’ Shirley

The 71-year-old first started seeing children safely across the roads of Warsop in 1982 and only retired last October.

Now she has been recognised by the Rotary Club of Warsop, Shirebrook and District, who have chosen her as its Citizen of the Year.

She was presented with her award at the John Fretwell Complex by the Rotary Club’s Steve Lunn and admits it was emotional moment.

“It was a wonderful gesture and a lovely surprise. It brought tears to my eyes, especially as my eldest son was there to see it,” she said.

“I can remember Sherwood Street used to flood sometimes and I used to carry the kids across - but I wasn’t as old then!

“To me, it was the best job in the world and I do miss it, but I couldn’t have done another winter.

“I suppose it’s because I’m bubbly and I have a chat with them that they liked me. I don’t stand for any nonsense, but I don’t shout and bawl either, and the kids were always lovely anyway.”

Shirley, of Mayfield Terrace, patrolled for four schools - Sherwood Street, Birklands, Hetts Lane and Meden - at the time of her retirement.

She enjoyed a leaving party at Hetts Lane and is delighted she still sees some of the children when out and about.

“Shirley is an absolutely fantastic lady and all the kids have loved having her to help them cross the roads - she’s done a super job,” said the Rotary Club’s Arty Parkin.

“People in Warsop have grown up with her and then seen their own children and grandchildren get to know her too. She has been a huge contributor to the local community.

“Whatever the weather, come rain or shine, Shirley has always had time for people.”
