WATCH OUT - Roads at their busiest today as people head home for Christmas

Christmas spirit is set to come alive on the roads today as families jump in their cars and head off to see loved ones for the holiday season, research has revealed.

The great Christmas getaway will begin in earnest today with 19 per cent of people driving home for Christmas making their festive journey on this date (December 23), a study by audio entertainment provider Audible found.

From a feeling of “bah humbug”, to people seeing the journey as part of the festive excitement - roads are expected to be filled with commuters.

More than half of British people say the agree that the festive season really begins when they get into the car to travel home for Christmas, as this journey affords them the best opportunity for quality family time during the festive period.

And the study revealed 44 per cent of drivers will spend time spotting Christmas lights and decorations, whilst 36 per cent will be singing carols.

Travellers are reminded to stay safe on the busy roads today - so they can enjoy the rest of the Christmas period.
