HUCKNALL welding student MICHAEL FOLBERT beat 12 other competitors to take the title in a national competition.
Michael (22), who is a student at South Nottingham College, took the BOC English Apprentice Welder title in the English national finals.
He pitted his skills against other finalists, including fellow South Nottingham College student, Mohammed Haideri, who finished fourth.
Presenting Michael with his prize, John Drummond, project director of Cammell Laird Shipbuilders, said how important welding is to the future of British manufacturing: “In the coming years, the UK is planning a number of major engineering projects, from the construction of new aircraft carriers and destroyers to railway lines and new power stations. All of these will need skilled welders to help build them.”
And proud welding tutor David Vickers added: “It has been a pleasure to be involved with their training and for two students to make the final and for one to win is very satisfying.”
Michael will now have to compete again in the UK finals of the competition to be held in October.
