June Lawry, currently of Grosvenor Road, Eastwood, admitted assaulting her husband of 36 years, Peter, by biting, scratching and kicking him at their home in Top Valley, Nottingham.

Lee Shepherd, prosecuting, said: “Due to her heavy drinking she became physically abusive. A verbal altercation started on September 4. She dug her nails into his arms, bit and kicked him.”

The next day, Nottingham Magistrates Court heard, Mrs Lawry threw a glass at her husband and ‘clawed and bit him again.’

When arrested, she told police that he ‘swiped at me first.’

The court heard she had a previous conviction for assault from April 2013.

Mr Shepherd said: “Mr Lawry doesn’t want a restraining order. He would like her to see what she has done and hopefully get some help. He is happy to have her back if she wants to go back.”

Finbarr Hennessy, defending, said: “There have been problems in both directions. They have been married since 1979. I think drink has unfortunately soured the relationship. It has only been in recent times that there has been a problem.”

He said the problems between them began three or four years ago, when Mr Lawry was forced to stop work after an injury and his wife became the sole breadwinner.

“Since the assault, she has moved to Eastwood,” he said. “Mr Lawry is hoping the relationship may start again. He feels she might need some help with her drink problem.”

Deputy district judge Peter King said: “I appreciate you would welcome some assistance to address that problem because one of the possibilities is to go back to him and you would look to sort the problem out.

“It would be better if you could get together.”

He imposed a 12 month community order with a 15-session rehabilitation activity requirement to address her ‘behavioural difficulties.’

He ordered Mrs Lawry to pay a £60 victim surcharge, costs of £100 as her late guilty plea caused a trial to be aborted, costs of £100 and £100 compensation.
