Worksop man impersonated step-dad to report himself to police

Duane Troy Dyer, 34, of South Avenue, admitted breaching a restraining order, imposed in May 2015, which banned him from visiting his mother and step-father’s address after he smashed a window there.

Police officers found Dyer drunk on a bench outside the South Avenue address on April 4.

Neil Hollett, prosecuting, said: “He tells the police to attend because he is, in his own words, ‘institutionalised’.

“In interview he told police he had been stopping there for the last few weeks because he had made up with his mother and step-dad.

“He told police he would continue to breach the order.”

David Grant, mitigating, said: “If the police had taken five minutes to have a look they would have seen that his mother has made a bedroom for him and he has integrated as part of the family.”

He said Dyer’s mother had written to the court asking for the restraining order to be lifted.

Mr Grant said Dyer had been ‘walking on eggshells’ and wanted to resolve the situation.

The court heard Dyer had even been dropped off at the address by police after a hospital visit two weeks ago.

Dyer denied telling police he was institutionalised, and claimed an officer had said prison was the best place for him.

Magistrates sentenced him to seven days in custody and ordered him to pay an £80 victim surcharge.
