A 2-1 defeat to the South Americans leaves England’s hopes of qualification for the knock-out stages hanging by a thread.

Roy Hodgson’s men must now hope that Italy win both their remaining matches against Costa Rica, later today, and Uruguay.

Only then can the Three Lions still make it through by beating Costa Rica convincingly to give them a better goal difference than their other rivals on three points.

Having lost 2-1 to Italy in Manaus on Saturday, England were determined to make amends in the cooler surroundings of Sao Paulo.

But after Wayne Rooney had hit the bar with a header, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, in his first game back from a knee injury, put Uruguay ahead at the break.

England worked hard to get themselves back in the game and eventually found an equaliser when Rooney swept home Glen Johnson’s cross, sparking wild celebrations.

It seemed then as if the team, captained by Steven Gerrard, might go on to win the game, but instead Suarez took advantage of some poor defending to net a Uruguay second and seal a 2-1 victory.

That will almost certainly send England home early, with their final group match against Costa Rica to take place on Tuesday at 5pm.
